[History]:
Susumu Kodai was born in Kanagawa Prefecture 7/7/2178 he was 12 when earth first made contact with extraterrestrial life. Unfoucanetly one general though any aliens showing up in the solar system would be there to invade he ordered the earth’s fleet to attack first. While Gamilas was most likely there to demand they become part of their empire being fired at first made them forgo any kind of diplomacy and decided to crush earth. After the second battle of Mars where UN Space Command forces managed to push the enemy back, Gamilas changed its strategy from straight out invasion to extermination of earth via long range planet bombing. The planet bombs over time polluted earth with radiation killing off life on the planet. The Human population built underground cities to escape the readation . Before his family could move into one of the completed cities Susumu’s family were killed when a planet bomb hit their home. Susumu survived because he had gone to meet his brother who was coming for a visit. Afterword he entered the space soldier training academy.

In January of 2199 he and Shima were dropped off on Mars to server at a recovery unit for an incoming messenger. The craft they were sent to meet was damaged during its flight and blew up. Kodia and Shima do locate and escape pod but only find it’s occupant a beautiful alien woman clutching capsule dead. They are then retrieved by the Kirishima returning to Earth after the operation M. It this then that Kodai learns that his brother’s ship the Yukikaze did not make it. Once on earth he confronts Okita about it but all he replies his that his brother was a good man.

Later He and Shima spot a Cosmo Zero in a hanger at the location they were ordered to stand by at. Though they’re told not to touch the fighter they take it for test flight anyway. An air raid siren goes off and they decided to try shooting the incoming bombers only to find they Zero wasn’t armed. They crash land by the wreck of an ancient warship that the bombers are targeting. Then one of the rust covered turrets moves and fires at the bomber.

Kodai had been selected as a candidate for the Yamato plan, a mission to Iscandar by the Space Battleship Yamato to retrieve a radiation removal system. After the deaths of most of the division heads Okita appoints Kodai Tactical Division Officer. Kodai was unsure of being given such an important position. He asks if Okita is sure and is told his brother was to be appointed before his death and that he should be able to carry out the duties fine. Soon after Kodai get’s his first taste of combat when they launch the ship while fending off an attack by a massive missile. Okita tells them good work. After their first warp jump forces them to land on a landmass in low Jupiter orbit Kodai shows is ability to lead the tactical division. Okita orders use of the wave motion gun to destroy the Gamilas base. Kodai is clearly in awe when the weapon’s destructive power proves to be more powerful than expected and obliterates the floating landmass.

Before leaving the solar system Kodai suggests they take a detour from their projected course to destroy the base on Pluto. Shima objects but when they receive a distress signal Shima wants to go investigate. Continently a piece of the engine decides to melt and the ore need to repair it is on the same moon the distress signal is coming from. Later during lunch Kodai and Shima talk about their disagreement and come to an understanding. Kodia is assigned to escort Yuki and Makoto on the rescue mission. He defends both against capture by Gamilas androids picking up a stray gun left on the deserted ship. Afterwards he realizes the gun and ship belonged to his brother Mamoru Kodai.

Okia does decide that while they should avoid combat they cannot allow the continued planet bombing of earth. For operation M-2 Kodai is ordered to directly lead the fighter squadrons. He and his wingman Akira locate the Reflex gun responsible for bombing earth and destroy the camouflage shielding around it allowing the Yamato to destroy it.

He and Akira later replace the crew members repairing damage to the ship so that they can talk to their families one last time before they leave earth’s communication range. Later Yuki finds him at one of the observation points playing the harmonica. She asks if he talked to earth and he tells her his family is dead then quickly changes the conversation to focus on her. Yuki reveals she has no memory prior to a year ago. They stare back towards the solar system and say their final farewells to Earth before declaring they’ll be back.

During a warp jump something goes wrong and the Yamato ends up trapped in a dimensional rift along with a Gamilas ship. Kodai meets with the Gamailas liaison to hear her plan. During the meeting she mentions how humans seem to love war as they attacked first without provocation by the Gamailas. In response he places his side arm on the table facing her and asks what her plan is. When the senior crew meets to discuss the proposal Kodai is on the side that wants to trust the Gamailas ship to hold up their part of the bargain.

Later when she becomes their prisoner Kodai wants to let her go since her ship did uphold the agreement. When integrating her he is sincerely nice. They let her go in range of a Gamilas base. When she asks about an incident that happened with Akira he replies “I think we can trust one another”. On the bridge he smiles as the fighter waggles it wings before heading towards the base.

He gets into an argument with Shima during a staff meeting and the two end up having to clean the whole ship. Yuki talks to him while he’s talking a brake. His not wanting to believe who fired first how he does feel the same as Akira who also lost her brother. He’s made up his mind to trust the Okita. He admits that he’s a little jealous of Shima because Shima still has family to protect. Yuki replies everyone on the ship is now his family. Later Okita talks to him about how he disobeyed to the order to attack that day and how sometimes a soldier needs to act like a human being and that the courage to disobey orders you believe are wrong in order to remain true to yourself. Back at their posts they make plans to snag the limited edition lunch the next day.

Under attack by a dimensional space submarine Captain Okita falls ill leaving Sanada in charge. The crew is forced to wait for the enemy to surface and news of Okita’s surgery. With a way to detect the sub proposed Kodai suggests instead of using the ship to send the ping they use a Seagull instead and offers to himself as pilot. Sanada rejects the idea but Kodai goes ahead with it anyway even discovering the fight chief was way ahead of him and already had the Seagull loaded. Their actions enable the Yamato to take out the enemy’s sight so they can escape. In reality Sanada had said no because he didn’t want Kodai getting hurt in a risky plan.

His duties suspended for disobeying orders Kodai is stuck flying Yuki on recon. They lose contact with the Yamato and return to find it drifting in space. While trying to retake control of the ship a gamilas agent sends Kodai visions of the day his family was killed to distract him. The visions of his brother on the other hand just end up sparking his will to fight and he’s able to snap out of the trance. He gets to Yuki in time to get her out of the Wave Motion chamber before the possessed Misaki starts up the reactor again.

He’s sent as leader of the landing team to collect supplies on Beemela. They head to check out a reading of a large metal object. He fights off a large insect creature with analyzer and the team locates an abandoned Iscandarian ship covered in moss. Following another reading of a metal object they find a wave motion core with information of a warp gate network.
Sanada Yuki and Kodai go to activate the warp gate. He realizes Yuki can’t be Iscandarian because he remembers the name of a poet who lived hundreds of years ago. Sanada explains why Yuki had an a message from Starsha and how Yurisha the first Iscandarain messenger was hurt in the same bombing that Yuki was. He also tells them how the comatose Yurisha is the ship’s Automatic Navigation System. Thinking activating the warp gate will kill him Sanada tells Kodai that he knew his brother and his guilt at not having the courage to tell him operation M was a decoy. Kodai tells him even if he had known Mamoru still would have gone. Sanada figures out away to service at the last second.

During the battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster he spots an incoming bomber with his binoculars. When the ship is boarded he takes control of the security teams. He sees Yuki being taken by the infiltrators and chases after their ship before losing it. He takes out his anger on some incoming bombers. Back at the hatch Yuki was taken from he meets the now awakened Yurisha.

Distracted by Yuki’s capture he’s ordered to fly recon and scout a planet they want to supply at. Yurisha decides to tag along somehow knowing Yuki is on that planet. Some escaped mutineers are hiding on the Seagull so they end up crashing on a prison planet. Mistaken for escaped prisoners they are brought to the prison. An uprising happens and in the confusion Kodai frees himself and goes to get Yuki. He manages to find the warden’s office but is too late to get to Yuki. Yurisha revels she’s knows where Yuki is being taken and shows Kodai the location of Gamilas and its sister planet Iscandar.
As they get closer to the Salezar system Kodai is clearly distracted as he’s worried about Yuki’s safely. He rejects Nanbu’s outline of a plan to rescue Yuki. Later Nanbu catches Kodai slamming his hand into a wall while sitting by his Cosmo Zero. With the crew all on standby in space suits Okita announces they will be heading for Iscandar because that is where hope lies. They warp into the system by a gas giant only to come
under fire by a large particle weapon.

[Personality]:
Susumu is a very kind hearted young man. He is often called naive by other crewmembers since he tends to say things sincerely. He is still young and straight out of training so he doesn’t always say things that are every well thought out. When interrogating Melda he starts babbling about how it something like in the movies and then asks her if the Gamilas have movies. He confuses a few people when he says to Melda they can understand one another. He sounds like he’s being naïve but because he still has empathy for her as a person he understands how she’s a person of honor.

While he does hate the Gamilas for killing his family he doesn’t seek revenge. Instead he seeks to prevent further loss of life in the war. He often volunteers for dangerous missions as flying a Seagull through a dense debris field putting himself at risk because alternative plan would give away the ship’s position and put the whole crew at risk. He’s also often assigned as escort for missions involving other senior crew members and is skill set enables him to fulfill multiple rolls allowing for smaller away teams.

He takes his duties as Tactical officer very seriously. He’s often surprised when Okita assigns him a task not on the bridge during battle. Though Nanbu the person directly under him is a bit trigger happy and tends to participate in rampant speculation. The guy was all for using the wave motion gun to destroy Pluto. Kodai who planned the mission doesn’t bring it into consideration. Kodai shows that he has the intelligence to keep a calm demeanor in combat. He’s put in charge of the fight group for operation M-2 because proper coordination between the fighters and the Yamato.
He does have one berserk button is when something happens to someone close to him. It’s never clear what he’s going to do when this happens. He goes storming up to Okita to ask about his brother’s death. He scares Nanbu when he questions about how Operation M was a diversion. He later flies off the handle when Yuki is abducted he chases after the ship Yuki is on instead of reporting it. Then instead of heading back takes out some of the bombers that are attacking the ship. He is clearly livid as his ship is brought back inside.

There is a bit of a rebellious streak in him. He and Shima were thinking of talking a cosmo zero out for a test flight even before the air raid sirens. They were told not to touch but they go out anyway because they can’t stand back and do nothing. Later he learns from Okita that a man needs the courage to know when to disobey orders. He does just that when he takes out the Seagull against Sanada’s orders. He also proves that it wasn’t as dangerous as they made it sound by not even having a near miss with a piece of space rock.

Later he’s very frustrated by the knowledge that Gamilas is also the twin planet of Iscandar. The mission is to go to Iscandar and retrieve the cosmo reverse system. He wants to save Yuki he cares about here greatly but a rescue mission would put the ship and Earth’s future at risk. Unlike Nanbu who drafts a proposal to recue he remembers their mission isn’t to fight so invading Gamilas isn’t an option. He does have a habit of bottling up his emotions and changing the subject when he thinks something about himself is depressing to someone. He doesn’t really easily make personal connections with people. Part of why he’s so distraught over Yuki because he didn’t realize he had feelings for her before she was captured.

He’s able to keep his feelings in check. When he does get into an argument with someone afterward he does take the time to think about why the argument happened. When they had their first fight Shima and Kodai apologized and came to an understanding about why the felt the way they did over lunch. Later after their second fight he asks Shima about going to get the lunch special being offered. What he’s really asking is that both of them talk things out.

This is Tactical Officer Susumu Kodai of the Yamato. Are there any members of the UN Cosmo Navy here?
Anyone have any idea where this planet might be? My ship was on a very important mission and I need to get back. I can’t let some treasure hunt endanger earth. There are people waiting for us to return.
